Competency #6: Succesive Fractions Search on WorldCat

I wanted to find some books that would be useful to me in my career as a Young Adult Librarian, so I did a Successive Fractions search in WorldCat. I did limit the entire search to books.

Search terms:
Service OR department OR program = 3,719,566 hits

Libraries OR public librar$

Teens OR young adult OR teenager = 194

Limiters: Publication years 2004-2008 = 33

Owned by >50 libraries = 11

Strategy:
WorldCat results for: (kw: Service OR kw: department OR kw: program) and (kw: libraries OR (kw: public and kw: librar$)) and (kw: teens OR (kw: young and kw: adult) OR kw: teenagers) and yr: 2004-2008 and cg: 07 and dt= "bks" . (Save Search) Records found: 11

Here are the first 5 hits:

This type of search is excellent when you have a well defined topic without too many "facets." When you can tell which one will bring in the most results and how to narrow your search it works well. This stragety worked quite well in WorldCat.

Competency #6: Building Block Search on ASP

I did a building block search in Academic Search Complete.

Here is my strategy:

This search brought me 34 results.

Here are the first 5 hits:

I am very comfortable with Building Block searches now, and they definitely bring me better results than the old keyword method. I will be using lots of these searches in the future. They are easy and they work well.

Competency #5: Tagging

This is the tag cloud for 101+ Teen Programs that Work by RoseMary Honnold. It is part of the Teens @ the Library series. I selected it because it has lots of useful and easy programs to chose from and would be a great resource for planning.
