Competency #4:Reading Rants! RSS Feed

I subscribed to the Reading Rants! Website which is now an interactive blog with an RSS feed that has "out of the ordinary booklists for teens." This website and feed are an excellent resource for reader's advisory in YA and for when you are looking for good books to buy for your collection.
The current feed lists the 5 most recent book reviews on the site.
I found this site through the YA YA YA's blog.

Competency #3: Teen Poetry Podcast

I found fascinating things searching for teen podcasts and libraries. Many libraries are using podcasts as an advertising mechanism to get teens into programs. I selected this podcast because I thought it would be a great addition to a library poetry program.

This podcast was created by teens at the Lansing Public Library. From the decription: Listen to Lansing area teens read their original poems!

I found the podcast through a Google.com search.

Competency #2: The YA YA YAs Blog

I found this blog http://theyayayas.wordpress.com/
via Google Blog Search blogsearch.google.com
This blog is written by three Young Adult Librarians who share all aspects of life in YA. The blog includes great book reviews, projects, ideas for summer reading club and much more.
I like this blog because it covers lots of topics and also because there are three librarians blogging, so you get several perspectives. I selected this quote as an example of why you need other people to help with the teen craft aspect of programming.

"A Crafty Librarian Manifesto
Filed under: Crafty Librarian — Trisha @ 10:32 am
When I started telling Gayle about what I wanted to include on this blog, craft ideas were at the top of my list. It’s hard thinking of crafts you can do that are:

1. cheap;
2. cool (meaning it doesn’t look like something that should be part of a children’s storytime, but is actually something teens would want to make);
3. you can do in a group;
4. you can do in less than an hour or so;
5. don’t require any special equipment like a sewing machine or a drill (unless you maybe work in Berkeley);
6. don’t require any special skills;
7. did I mention cheap?
So in order to remember those crafts that made me say, “Hey, this was/would be such a great program!” and for anyone else struggling to find good crafty ideas to use with teens, I thought it would be fun to have a “Crafty Librarian” feature on the blog."

Competency #1: Why blog?

I have created this blog to fulfill the competencies requirement for my Information Storage and Retrieval class.
My topic of interest for this blog is Teen Service and Programming in the Public Library.
I look forward to an information filled semester.
