Competency #9: Internet Searching

I chose to link to the Voice of Youth Advocates website. VOYA is a magazine serving young adult librarians and supporting librarians who "Advocate for Youth." VOYA is an excellent magazine. It is published bimonthly and in addition to YALSA's publication is a critical subscription for YA Librarians.

I found this website through the Google.com search engine.

Competency # 8: Multimedia

I performed a Google Image search and found this interesting graph from a 2004 Gallup poll about what teens do for entertainment.

Gallup Poll (Oct.2004) on Teen Leisure Habits: TV Still On Top accessed via
http://www.frankwbaker.com/media_use.htm Nov 13, 2007.

The Copyright statement is at the bottom of their homepage:

Media Literacy Clearinghouse makes available some copyrighted material. We understand our use of any such copyrighted material to constitute a "fair use" as provided for in section 107 of the US Copyright Law.

So to help counteract the large weight TV and Internet have in Teens lives and encourage teens to read YALSA has created Teen Read Week with the slogan "Read for the Fun of It"

Image found with a Google.com image search and accessed through YALSA www.ala.org/yalsa

The copyright statement is under the logos here:

Competency #7: Social Networking- My Space

I searched in MySpace for Young Adult AND Public Library Services and it looks like there is a lot to chose from! Many public libraries have young adult MySpace pages. I elected to link to the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) MySpace page. YALSA is the young adult organization under ALA. They publish valuable material in their journal and they are an excellent organization for young adult librarians.

From the MySpace page:
"Do you love music, technology, manga, graphic novels, chick lit, anime, gaming? Are you a teen, author, publisher, game developer, web designer, librarian, or youth worker? Yes? YALSA is here for you!"

Competency #6: Specific Facet in Dialog/ ERIC

I performed a specific facet first search in Dialog accessing the ERIC database.

Stratgey:
S1 YOUNG ADULTS 5650 Hits
S2 LIBRARY SERVICES 12294 Hits
S3 S1 AND S2 64 Hits
S4 S3/2000:2007 11 Hits

Here are my three favorite hits:

4/8/3 DIALOG(R)File 1:(c) format only 2007 Dialog. All rts. reserv.
0011013549 ERIC Number: EJ701746

I had a hard time learning how to use DIALOG effectively. It is a very different interface and search mechanism than the other databases I am used to. Because the database is so large I kept getting thousands of results and had a hard time narrowing them down. I finally realized I needed to make my search more specific and then I got good results. I also had to work on the command language to get it to do what I wanted.

Competency #6: Citation Pearl Growing Search in LibLit

I did a Citation Pearl Search in the Library Literature database. I started with a citation from my succesive fractions search in WorldCat.

Extreme teens : library services to nontraditional young adults / Author: Anderson, Sheila B. Publication: Westport, Conn. : Libraries Unlimited, 2005Document: English : Book Internet Resource Libraries Worldwide: 299

In LibLit I entered these search terms:

(extreme teens) TI AND (anderson, sheila) AU

Once I reached the article (it was the only one retreived) I browsed the subject headings that the book was indexed under and clicked on Young Adults' Activities/Projects in the Subject Headings area.
This brought me 237 results.
I limited to Full Text and retreived 97 results.
These are my two favorite hits:

I really liked citation pearl searching. Once you have found a good book or article it is a great way to find where else to look in a database. When you find the right "Controlled vocabulary" or index term you get great results.
