I chose to link to the Voice of Youth Advocates website. VOYA is a magazine serving young adult librarians and supporting librarians who "Advocate for Youth." VOYA is an excellent magazine. It is published bimonthly and in addition to YALSA's publication is a critical subscription for YA Librarians.

Competency # 8: Multimedia

I performed a Google Image search and found this interesting graph from a 2004 Gallup poll about what teens do for entertainment.

Competency #7: Social Networking- My Space

I searched in MySpace for Young Adult AND Public Library Services and it looks like there is a lot to chose from! Many public libraries have young adult MySpace pages. I elected to link to the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) MySpace page. YALSA is the young adult organization under ALA. They publish valuable material in their journal and they are an excellent organization for young adult librarians.

I had a hard time learning how to use DIALOG effectively. It is a very different interface and search mechanism than the other databases I am used to. Because the database is so large I kept getting thousands of results and had a hard time narrowing them down. I finally realized I needed to make my search more specific and then I got good results. I also had to work on the command language to get it to do what I wanted.

Competency #6: Citation Pearl Growing Search in LibLit

I did a Citation Pearl Search in the Library Literature database. I started with a citation from my succesive fractions search in WorldCat.

Once I reached the article (it was the only one retreived) I browsed the subject headings that the book was indexed under and clicked on Young Adults' Activities/Projects in the Subject Headings area.
This brought me 237 results.
I limited to Full Text and retreived 97 results.

I really liked citation pearl searching. Once you have found a good book or article it is a great way to find where else to look in a database. When you find the right "Controlled vocabulary" or index term you get great results.

I am very comfortable with Building Block searches now, and they definitely bring me better results than the old keyword method. I will be using lots of these searches in the future. They are easy and they work well.
